Brian weathered storm to collect coins

THE visit of an uncle when he was a teenager and bad holiday weather in Southport when he was engaged led Brian King to become an expert on ancient Jewish coins.

When he was around 17 and his family had moved to Southport from Liverpool, Brian’s uncle, Alec Sirotkin, came to stay.

Uncle Alec, who owned antique shops in Scunthorpe, asked Brian to look for pennies with certain dates for his shop’s coin collection. He told his nephew that he would give him a shilling for every coin he sent him.
