Arsonist tried to torch synagogue

GERMAN police are hunting an arsonist who tried to set fire to a synagogue in Ulm early on Saturday. He was seen pouring a bottle of liquid on to a wall and setting it alight, damaging the building’s exterior. “It shows the insidious face of antisemitism,” said the state’s prime minister Winfried Kretschmann. Nazis destroyed Ulm’s synagogue in the 1938 Kristallnacht pogroms.
