JULES Hoffman of Australia wants to find relatives of his wife, Sarah, whose late father was Boruch Lapidos.

Originally his name was Lapidus but due to transcription errors, it became Lapidos.

He was born on February 8, 1903 in Rezekene/Rezhitsa, 125 miles from Riga. His father was Chaim Lapidus who would have been born around 1870. His wife was Bella Davidov.

Boruch told Jules that he had a sister Rifka and a brother Benjamin. To escape the call-up into the Russian army, Boruch left Rezekene and travelled overland to Marseilles and then by ship to Palestine where he worked as a mounted policeman and a cartage contractor.

He married Rachel Schloss, born in Lublin, in Tel Aviv on December 11, 1925. While in Palestine he joined the Hechalutz and served under Captain Joseph Trumpeldor.

In 1926, a son, David, was born and the family emigrated to Brisbane.

Jules adds that his late mother-in-law, Rachel Lapidos, nee Schloss was related to the Ungar family in Manchester.

DAVID Barnett of Wallsend is trying to trace the Barnett family tree but can't find the marriage of Nathan Barnett to Annie Oxley.

Nathan was born in 1872 and died 1962. He was a fruiterer in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, owning three shops. He had two sons - David who was killed during World War II and James who lived until 92 - and three sisters, Ettie, Olive and Mary.

Mary is now 98 but cannot remember much apart from the fact that there is a 'family bible' which has gone missing.

James Barnett married Mary Wallace, who is also still alive at the age of 92 but is unable to give any information about her parents-in-law.

''I long to know something about my Jewish past,'' David said.
