Society helping out with Welsh studies

THE Manchester branch of the Jewish Genealogical Society is working on two major research projects.

The group is helping Dr Nathan Abrams of Bangor University put together a history of the Jewish communities of Wales.

He has provided a questionnaire made up of 34 key points.

"By providing answers to some of the questions, a picture can be built up of how Jewish families came to settle in Wales, how they lived and coped with their daily needs, educated their children and how they kept their religion," a spokesperson said.

In addition, the branch is to help the Imperial War Museum in London with their database of war memorials, either in streets, parks, public places, shuls, schools, libraries etc.

The group would like to hear from any shul, club or society which has a memorial board of any kind with names of men or women who served in the armed forces, either as regular servicemen or in any other capacity.

Helping out

Gareth Booker of Warrington is helping a friend research her Jewish family history.

The Usden family lived in Manchester in the Cheetham Hill area. Abraham Usden and his wife Charlotte (nee Sapiro/a) were the first of this family to come to England.

The other family members were Eli Engelberg and his wife Lily (nee Franks).

Eli was born in Manchester while his wife was born in Scotland. On Eli and Lily's marriage certificate the witnesses were Tobias Kletz and Louis Pavion, so Gareth would like to hear from their descendants too.

They have found that the surname Usden may also be Husdan and the surname Engleberg and its variants will also be known as Ingleby which is what the family is probably known as now.

They also discovered the surname Langfier in the family and believe they may be related to the court photographers of the same surname.
