Offensive 'bring Jewish girl' dinner

OXFORD University students have been branded "insensitive" and "distasteful" after their rugby club was charged with "antisemitism".

Team members were invited to bring "attractive Jewish girls" to a dinner and guests were asked to dress as Orthodox Jews.

"It is grossly insensitive," blasted Oxford Jewish students' chaplain Rabbi Aaron Katchen.

The Union of Jewish Students said that the party's theme caused "real offence".

And the National Union of Students slammed the partygoers as "extraordinarily offensive".

At least one student is said to have come dressed in what has been described as 'Jewish caricature' clothing and carrying a moneybag.

When Rabbi Katchen learned of the theme, he asked the Oxford University Student Union to cancel the party.

They did, but team members allegedly still decided to dress as Jews.

Canadian-born Rabbi Katchen told the Jewish Telegraph: "The people who arranged the theme were obviously not thinking nor were they aware that it could cause offence or upset people.

"Jewish students to do not want to be in a place where others think this kind of thing is OK.

"They are annoyed that the idea was conceived in the first place."

UJS campaigns' director Yair Zivan said he was appalled.

Mr Zivan told the Jewish Telegraph: "The actions of a few individuals have caused real offence to Jewish students on campus.

"In 2008 old myths and antisemitic stereotypes are still appearing among supposedly educated students.

"The student movement in Britain has made great strides to tackle antisemitism but incidents like this remain a stain on the reputation of universities."

Oxford Jewish Students' Society co-chairman Anna Harwood said some Jewish students felt that the theme of the party was belittling their faith.

Miss Harwood told the Jewish Telegraph: "We are saddened by what has happened.

"The atmosphere on campus is good, and we have a thriving Jewish student community here."

And the university condemned the students' behaviour. A spokesman said: "We are strongly opposed to racial stereotyping.

"The university reaffirms its commitment to promoting good race relations and condemns any form of religious discrimination."

National Union of Students' president Wes Streeting said they are dedicated to eradicating antisemitism on university campuses.

He declared: "Not only is this behaviour extraordinarily offensive and distasteful, it brings the wider Oxford University community into disrepute.

"We are committed to working alongside UJS to stamp out antisemitism wherever it appears on campuses."

Last year, the captain of the rugby team at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies was forced to apologise to fellow students after inviting students to an "English party".

The team was accused of racism after sending out an invitation to the event, promising "no bongos, shisha pipes or Arabic music".
