GLASGOW DIARY
Elsie wants GTS pictures

ELSIE COUTTS is looking for photographs of the Jewish Girls' Training Corps during street parades with the Jewish Lads' Brigade.

Mrs Coutts is particularly interested in photographs of the GTS on parade and with the flags of the Jewish Lads' Brigade pipe Band.

She is planning to make a display for the Glasgow Jewish archives in Garnethill Synagogue.

It is thought that members of the GTC between 1955 and 1964 would be most helpful.

Mrs Coutts said: "I still have the two flags with the flag poles, we proudly held on parades.

"One being a Union Jack and the other the St Andrew's flag with a brass Star of David on top. The latter has the wording of Glasgow Jewish GTC.

"I have some data, ie printed GTC certificates, subscription roll books, however I am in great need of photographs."

Mrs Coutts, formerly Captain Elsie Evans, took over the company from Zelda Blint.

Before Glasgow's GTC and Jewish Lads' Brigade merged in about 1967, Mrs Coutts was the captain for 10 years.

On many occasions the GTC marched behind the flags held by their own bearers to Garnethill Synagogue.

Every year for the remembrance parade the GTC would march with the JLB Pipe Band from Glasgow's South Portland Street Synagogue to George Square.

They would join together with AJEX and continue to Garnethill Synagogue for the service.
